PRESS RELEASE: TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER 2005

The Asian Windsurfing Tour returned to Penghu in Taiwan for the start of the 2005/06 season. After three full days of racing in wind speeds that peaked at over 50 knots NeilPryde Team Rider Anders Bringdal, from Sweden, was crowned champion.

Ever since its inception in 1999 the Penghu ProAm has become renowned for its roaring winds with riders having been clocked at speeds of over 40 knots. This always brings excitement and anticipation to all Asia’s elite windsurfers.

It was with utter amazement that Organizers looked at the weather charts to find that wind speeds over the planned dates of the event would be “zero”. In a bold move the Organizers chose to contact all the international and local windsurfers planning to attend and explain that the event would be postponed for a week due to the unforeseen drop in wind speed. Unfortunately some sailors would not be able to change their travel plans, but with the event having such a reputation for exciting sailing most riders were able to attend the following week.

Final report from the Penghu ProAm:

With a fleet of 68 sailors from 13 countries and wind speeds reaching over 50 knots the Penghu ProAm was well and truly back .

Swedish legend Anders Bringdal would be the man to beat and right from the start he signalled his speed in the testing conditions and took three bullets in the first three races. Bringdal was untouchable and winning became a formality for the big man in these unforgiving conditions. Robbie Radis put himself out of contention with a shoulder injury leaving Paolo Ianetti to come in second ahead of local based Australian Alex Mowday. The top Asian competitor was Hong Kong’s Ho Chi Ho who finished in fifth. Unfortunately for the defending AWT Champion Dan Ellis, fourth place was the best he could come away with at the end of the 3 day event.

Comments from Anders Bringdal:

"Awesome conditions. It's so bumpy here, even my teeth hurt! But the wind is incredible, and the local guys can really handle it, they put on a good show against us. To go fast though, you have to keep sheeted in, wave sail or slalom sail, if you sheet out, you're not gonna win!"

Comments from Dan Ellis defending AWT Champion

“This year wind speeds clocked over 50 knots and sailors were nearly blown off the water!

It’s is the windiest place I've competed in by far. At low tide it was flatter, great sailing, and good fun. But high tide was a real test, bumpy, choppy, and in this wind, a real handful. It took a while to get used to but I can't wait to come back with some smaller kit!”

One Taiwanese sailor who grabbed attention was Zhang Hao from Penghu who really impressed the visiting pros. At only 15 he came 8 th overall, scored a third place in the last round, and reminds Bringdal of a young Bjorn Dunkerbeck, with talent and strength to excel in these ferocious winds!

The AWT takes a break now until the New Year when action resumes in Kuantan at the Monsoon Madness.
