For me there are 3 different conditions for Wave boards. Side-side off-shore big waves, side-side off-shore small waves, onshore waves (big and small does not make big difference) and flat water high wind. A single fin is the best for flat water high wind and onshore conditions as you can plane early, accelerate and make good upwind angle. Also for big waves the single fin has a lot of grip, is very save and makes nice long carving bottom turns. Twinzer fin is the best in waves up to mast high as it is very radical and still planes early, accelerate good and makes good upwind angle. So now we have already all the possible conditions with only 2 fin setups and the question is for which conditions is the Quad? A series of fins behind each other create a directional feeling and therefore turn less than a series of fins side by side. As well 4 fins are slower as they create more drag. To make a Quad turn good the board need a lot of rocker. The combination of 4 fins and a lot of rocker is very slow and early planning, acceleration and top speed is missing a lot. So with a quad it is more difficult to catch waves, it is not so good for jumping, to slow for very big waves and for onshore conditions it is very hard to get out the break. So where does the Quad perform well? When I evaluate the Quad there where way to many negative aspects then positive and that’s why I tried to find a better solution and combine Twinzer and Single fin in one board. The result is the Trailer Wave.
